Great review, Steve.
Got this recording recently. Love the way that, in contrast to Bernstein’s heavier, deeply emotional take on the work, Fischer brings to this symphony a chamber music quality – without losing any orchestral weight when such is needed.
I also admire Fischer’s refusal to ‘interpret’ music. He just aims to make what’s on the page come alive in the air.
Definitely a disc for Mahler devotees to add to their collection.

Nary a word about the Carnegie Mahler series? It was superb. Hearing that body of work in such a short time span was so intense and so very rewarding. Truly one of the best series I have ever attended.
I’m just glad Thomassini didn’t review them. I could see the opening line right now: “The Staatakapelle Berlin performed magnificently in their traversal of the Mahler symphonies. What a wasted opportunity, then, for Maestros Barenboim and Boulez. Surely they could have programmed a works of a vibrant young composer on each of the programs. Why, if Esa-Pekka Salonen, blah, blah, blah…” -
Kind thanks, Maestro Kuhlau. And alas, Maestro Shoe Mann, I was unable to attend any of the Staatskapelle Berlin concerts, being elsewhere assigned or otherwise ensnared for every night of what was no doubt a memorable journey. I’m envious of those who were able to travel along.
