From Sequenza 21:
Hello Jerry Bowles and Sequenza21,
I am writing from the office of Bang on a Can in Brooklyn. We are
currently beginning a search for a new cellist to be a member of the
Bang on a Can All-Stars. In order to reach the broadest possible pool
of applicants, we would love to list this job opening on the Sequenza21
website. Attached is a description of the position and the application
procedure. Please reply to jeremy@bangonacan.org, or call the office at 718-852-7755 and ask to speak with me or our executive director Kenny Savelson.Best,
Jeremy Thal

From Blabbermouth.net:
Berlin’s THE OCEAN has issued the following update:
”We
are looking for a long-term live cello player for upcoming tours in
Europe and the U.S. and possible future recording sessions. What we’re
looking for is a skilled musician with good intonation; someone who can
read sheet music and has classical training but also the rock / metal background and
understanding that is inevitable in order to enjoy long tours and life
on the road — ideally, someone who can play both cello and viola and
switch between these instruments. As much as we love acoustic
instruments, our past experiences have taught us that in a live
environment the only thing that works is an E-cello. If you’re
interested or know anyone who might be, please write an email to
info@theoceancollective.com."THE OCEAN’s extensive concept album, "Precambrian", was released last Novemebr via Metal Blade Records. The double-disc effort is the soundtrack to the beginning of evolution, subdivided into two successive geological eons ("Hadean/Archean" and "Proterozoic").
The songs are divided into five subordinate eras, with the songtitles
carrying the names of subordinate geological periods. Disc 1 features
the typical THE OCEAN brutality while Disc 2 shows the deeper, more emotional side of what the collective also stands for.
Say, think both groups could share the same player? Think of the crossover possibilities!
Speaking of versatile cellists who rock, the heroic Fred Sherry will be celebrated this Sunday and Monday nights (Feb. 3 and 4) at the Guggenheim Museum. The program includes three pieces by John Zorn — 777, Amour fou and an untitled work for Joseph Cornell. Preceding the concert is a conversation with Sherry, Zorn and Charles Wuorinen that could easily be worth the price of admission all by itself. I’m really disappointed that I can’t get to either performance but I hope someone else will attend and report.
These concerts are the opening salvo of what I’m told is a three-pronged salute to Sherry, who has long been one of New York’s most valuable players. I’ll post details on the remaining events when I get them. Meanwhile mark May 4 on your calendar, because that’s when the recently reunited Tashi (Sherry, Richard Stoltzman, Ida Kavafian and Peter Serkin) will be playing a free concert at New York’s Town Hall, under the banner of the "Free for All at Town Hall" series.
