You say tomato…

Dan_lippelDan Lippel, guitarist of the excellent new-music quartet Flexible Music, dropped me a note to clarify that the group’s upcoming concert on March 30, which I mentioned at the end of a review of its last concert, will be held at the Quaker Meeting House. I’d referred to it as the New York Quarterly Meeting House, which is what the Wet Ink collective called it when I wrote about the Matthew Welch concert that group presented there recently. Lending further confusion, it’s also commonly called the Friends Meeting House. Apparently, we’re all correct; what’s more, the name on the establishment’s official web site is the Fifteenth Street Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. So, just to make sure everyone knows where to go, the address is 15 Rutherford Place at East 15th Street, not far from Union Square.

Dan neglected to ask me to mention something very exciting, but I’ll do it anyway: He’s playing a solo recital on Thursday night (Feb. 15) at The Tank at Collective: Unconscious, 279 Church Street between Franklin and White. This is the second installment of "Inflections," a series presented by AMP New Music. Dan will be playing music by J.S. Bach, Reiko Fueting, Elliott Carter, Richard Wernick and Nils Vigeland. Further concerts in the series promise works by Berio, Maderna, Takemitsu, Sciarrino, Grisey, Lachenmann, Xenakis, Caleb Burhans and many more, so be sure to have a look at that schedule. (It boggles my mind that all of this is taking place in the former home of Harmony Burlesque Theater, one of the most notorious full-contact strip joints in the naked city…)

Like most New York freelancers, Dan is a multi-tasker. Another group with which he is affiliated, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), has a very promising concert looming ahead on Tuesday (Feb. 20) at Columbia University’s St. Paul’s Chapel. The program turns the spotlight on the ensemble’s exceptional harpist, Bridget Kibbey, who will be featured in solo pieces by Carter, André Caplet and Kati Agócs, duos by Takemitsu and Sebastian Currier, and a trio by Hans Werner Henze (which also includes Dan). This one starts at 6pm, and it’s free.

Da_capo_chamber_playersFinally, while we’re on the subject of free concerts, the Da Capo Chamber Players are playing music by Cambodian-American composer Chinary Ung on Monday night (Feb. 19) at 6pm, in the Juilliard School’s Morse Recital Hall. There are four works on the program — suggesting, perhaps, a nicely filled CD? — and four guests are featured: soprano Lucy Shelton, guitarist William Anderson and percussionists Tom Kolor and Pablo Rieppi.
